Ian destroyed about 40,000 linear feet of seawall here

Hurricane Ian came up Charlotte Harbor on 28 September 2022 along nearly the same track as Hurricane Charley in 2004, with comparable wind. Nearly 600 properties on the Punta Gorda canal system were identified with seawall damage, much of it near catastrophic failure.

Over six and a half miles of seawall was damaged in Punta Gorda Isles and about three quarters of a mile in Burnt Store Isles, affecting roughly 582 parcels, around 40,000 linear feet in total. FEMA and the State of Florida covered about 95% of the city’s repair cost.

The pattern is worth understanding if you own here: failures clustered in platted canal communities with continuous walls, where losing one panel loads the panels either side of it. Your neighbour’s wall is part of your problem.

Why it matters

Know which canal district you are in

Punta Gorda Isles and Burnt Store Isles carry separate canal maintenance assessments and are administered differently, and an owner genuinely needs to know which one their address sits in before budgeting work.

Rotonda West’s circular canal plan, Englewood’s Lemon Bay frontage and Boca Grande’s pass-side current on Gasparilla Island are each a different proposition again.

A free inspection tells you which one you are looking at.

What a free inspection includes

A contractor comes to your property, looks at the structure above and below the waterline where needed, and tells you what is actually happening.

You get a written scope and estimate. No obligation, no trip fee.

  • On-site assessment of the structure and surrounding soil
  • Photos and a plain-English explanation of the problem
  • Written estimate with scope and materials
  • Repair versus replacement guidance where both are options
