Milton landed at Siesta Key, thirteen days after Helene

Hurricane Milton made direct landfall at Siesta Key on 9 October 2024 as a Category 3 with 115 mph winds (the first direct hurricane landfall in Sarasota County since 1944), driving storm surge of six to nine feet above ground level from Venice south to Boca Grande, and close to ten feet at the southern end of Manasota Key.

Hurricane Helene had already battered the county thirteen days earlier. On Anna Maria Island the pair destroyed dunes and drove up to five feet of sand into buildings. FDEP published a Helene and Milton impact report for south-west Florida in March 2025.

Why it matters

The calendar sets your schedule as much as the contractor does

Manatee protection zones and seasonal in-water work windows are written into permits across Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte waters, and they genuinely limit when work can happen.

If you are planning a replacement, the useful question is not only how long the contractor’s backlog is but which window your permit allows. Longboat Key, Siesta Key and the Anna Maria Island towns add their own local requirements on top of the county’s.

A free inspection tells you which one you are looking at.

What a free inspection includes

A contractor comes to your property, looks at the structure above and below the waterline where needed, and tells you what is actually happening.

You get a written scope and estimate. No obligation, no trip fee.

  • On-site assessment of the structure and surrounding soil
  • Photos and a plain-English explanation of the problem
  • Written estimate with scope and materials
  • Repair versus replacement guidance where both are options
