Concrete seawall cap along a Cedar Key waterway

CEDAR KEY, FLORIDA

Seawall Repair Cedar Key

Seawall repair in Cedar Key is tightly limited: the Comprehensive Plan bars new bulkheads and seawalls except where an engineer shows one is needed to protect an existing structure, and no variances are allowed (City LDC Sec. 4-10.04.01).

Licensed Permits handled Florida waterfront

We connect Cedar Key owners with licensed marine contractors who prepare the engineering case.

Free inspection, a written scope, no obligation.

The hearing

The application goes to the Building Official with a Florida Registered Engineer’s certification and a site plan. The official reports within 20 days, a sign goes up on the lot, and the City Commission holds a quasi-judicial hearing and issues a written order (Sec. 4-10.04.03).

The Commission weighs whether the wall is the minimum size needed and whether alternatives were tried.

Back-to-back storms

The Cedar Key tide gauge peaked at 6.89 feet above mean higher high water in Idalia in 2023, then 9.30 feet in Helene in 2024, with 8 to 12 feet of inundation above ground from south of Steinhatchee through Cedar Key (National Hurricane Center). Walls that took both should be checked behind the cap.

Why it matters

Rip-rap

In protected zones, rip-rap must go at the toe of every replaced seawall, and new rip-rap is limited to 50 feet of shoreline (Sec. 4-5.01.04).

A free inspection tells you which one you are looking at.
