Concrete seawall cap along a Marathon waterway

MARATHON, FLORIDA

Seawall Repair Marathon

Seawall repair in Marathon starts with an engineer: city code requires all docks, piers, seawalls and revetments to be designed by a professional engineer (Marathon LDR Sec. 104.64).

Replacing a wall

Hardened shorelines are allowed on residential canals and altered shorelines to replace a deteriorated seawall or stabilize a severely eroded bank, when riprap or a sloping revetment will not work. The cap may be up to 2 feet wide, and a 6 inch swale, berm or curb goes landward (Sec. 106.36).

The bulkhead line

The bulkhead line is set at the average mean high water line when you apply, and backfilling to reclaim eroded land is prohibited. The City Biologist decides whether riprap with biotechnical erosion control is enough before a seawall is approved.

Federal, state and water management district permits come before the city building permit, whether the wall sits on a residential canal or is an existing wall facing Florida Bay.

Why it matters

Open water

No new vertical seawalls or bulkheads on open water shorelines, which the code defines to include Florida Bay, the Atlantic and the Straits of Florida. Existing nonconforming open-water walls may be repaired or replaced in their footprint (Sec. 108.20).

A free inspection tells you which one you are looking at.
